What We Do
This technology is only available at two rehabilitation facilities in Canada
Our Med-X Lumbar Extension machine provides targeted resistance over either a full range of isolated lumbar motion, or a selected limited range. Isometric testing occurs every three degrees within a patient's range of motion. During the testing phase, the computer software attached to the machine plots a strength curve that compares the patient's strength and range of motion to age- and gender-matched norms. Accuracy and reliability of testing is addressed by the machine's ability to factor out the torque of both torso mass and stored energy. For precise diagnostic understanding, tissue compression and joint elasticity can be assessed and factored out at each angle tested.
Our Med-X Rotary Torso machine provides targeted resistance throughout the thoracic spine while stabilizing the pelvis. It isolates the abdominal obliques and spinal rotators. Research on adolescent scoliosis has shown that treatment with the rotary torso machine can stop progression of the curvature and in some cases, reverse the curvature.
Our Med-X machines are shown clinically to be effective for treating chronic back and neck pain. This highly advanced technology is available at very few spinal rehabilitation facilities.
Med-X technology allows therapists to precisely isolate troubled lower back and neck muscles. This lets them target their efforts toward exercising, strengthening and stabilizing only those specific muscles.
Med-X research shows that the majority of patients with chronic spinal pain are significantly de-conditioned. Naturally, if you're in pain you are careful about how you walk, stand, sit, bend over and lie down. Over time this causes muscle weakness that can lead to or exacerbate many conditions, such as herniated discs, facet syndrome and degenerative joint disease.
While many physical therapy providers have special exercise machines that they claim will strengthen the back and neck muscles, clinical research has shown that many of these machines actually strengthen the hamstrings and gluteus muscles, or the upper back and shoulder muscles instead.
A controlled study by researchers at the University of Florida showed that people who worked out on two different "low back machines" for 12 weeks actually gained no strength at all in their lumbar extensor muscles. Our Med-X machines however, allow our therapists to test a patient's existing muscle strength and conditioning, and help him or her recondition specific muscles in their lower spine and/or cervical spine.
